Role Overview:

Varian is delivering the latest generation proton therapy system for cancer treatment to Oslo University Hospital Radiumhospitalet.

The products are complex, and Varian has a comprehensive support infrastructure to support our customers, including an on-site team tasked with operating and servicing the system.

The Onsite Service Engineer services and maintains the Proton Therapy System, performs in-depth Preventative Maintenance and monitors system performance and parameters during clinical hours. 

Varian will provide extensive training on the proton therapy system, including on-site training at other Varian facilities world-wide.

Role Description:

The Service Engineer, services and performs diagnostic, troubleshooting, repair and preventative maintenance of a highly complex and state of the art Proton Particle Accelerator to deliver the best system performance to our customers.

The Service Engineer is responsible for the following:

  • Provides highly visible customer support through the servicing and maintenance of the proton beam therapy system and ancillary devices.
  • Monitors system performance during clinical hours / patient treatment and resolves system issues.
  • Performs in-depth system analysis for repairs and system optimization.
  • Performs Preventative Maintenance per the site PM plan and in compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Be skilled in working with hardware and software, PCs, and networking/wireless networking.
  • Installs and upgrades a wide range of complex and advanced company products according to technical documentation and company guidelines to ensure that customer’s equipment operates efficiently.
  • Able to work in a highly dynamic environment that requires the individual to work a Rotating shift (Flex Shift), which comprises of a scheduled rotation of Days and Evening work shifts and occasional weekend work.
  • Able to work in a team environment with little to no direct supervision.

Minimum Required Skills and Knowledge:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Mechanical or electro-mechanical engineering experience.
  • Experience or knowledge with the maintenance of mechanical equipment such as pumps, electrical motors, etc.
  • Experience with precision tools and diagnostic equipment’s (i.e. Calipers, Torque Wrench’s, DVMs, Oscilloscopes, etc.)
  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken. Fluency in a Scandinavian language is an advantage.
  • Ability to work in a radiation-controlled environment.
  • Willingness and flexibility to work in shift work pattern environment.
  • Willingness and flexibility to work occasional weekends.

Other Desired Skills and Knowledge: 

  • Experience or knowledge with High vacuum.
  • Experience or knowledge with Vacuum leak checks/detection.
  • Experience or knowledge of Robot technology fundamentals.
  • Experience or knowledge of Cryogenics fundamentals.

Education/Experience:

  • Associates Degree or equivalent 3 - 5 years of related experience.
