Job Description:

We’re looking for a sharp, detail-oriented Sub-Editor/Proofreader to join our dynamic sports news team. The ideal candidate will have a passion for sports journalism, a meticulous eye for grammar and style, and a solid understanding of SEO best practices to help our stories reach the widest possible audience.You’ll work closely with writers and editors to ensure all published content is accurate, engaging, consistent in tone, and fully optimised for search.

Responsibilities:

• Edit and proofread sports news articles, match reports, features, and opinion pieces for grammar, punctuation, clarity, and consistency.
• Ensure factual accuracy, style compliance, and adherence to editorial guidelines.
• Write and optimize SEO elements including page titles, meta descriptions, headlines, subheadings, and internal links to boost visibility and traffic.
• Collaborate with writers and editors to improve story structure, flow, and readability.
• Check formatting and layout before publication to ensure content is clean, professional, and visually appealing.
• Monitor and update older content to maintain SEO performance and relevance.
• Stay informed about current sports events, trends, and SEO developments affecting digital journalism.
• Proven experience as a Sub-Editor, Copy Editor, or Proofreader, ideally in sports media or digital publishing.
• Strong command of English grammar, spelling, and style.
• Deep understanding of SEO principles, particularly relating to on-page optimization (titles, meta descriptions, internal linking, keyword usage).

Qualifications:

• Familiarity with Wordpress and Google tools (Search Console, Analytics).
• Excellent attention to detail and time management under tight deadlines.
• Knowledge of major sports (football, cricket, rugby, tennis, etc.) and an ability to spot factual errors or inconsistencies in reporting.
• Team player with strong communication skills and editorial judgment.
