We are seeking an experienced and pragmatic Governance & Legal Lead to design, implement, and optimise governance & legal operations across our European business. This role ensures compliance, operational efficiency, and alignment with regulatory standards, while acting as a trusted partner to the executive team and coordinating shared initiatives with our corporate partner, Zurich. The ideal candidate combines governance & legal expertise with structured execution, project management skills, and a strong understanding of technology-driven environments - particularly software development. Inspired by modern legal delivery models, this position focuses on operational excellence, stakeholder engagement, and process optimisation. Key Responsibilities Governance Oversight & Legal Coordination Develop and evolve a lean, scalable governance & legal framework to support business growth and cross-border consistency Coordinate legal activities across jurisdictions, ensuring alignment with internal policies and European regulatory requirements Monitor governance and compliance risks and ensure mitigation measures are embedded in operational processes Provide strategic advice to senior leadership on corporate, commercial, regulatory, and compliance matters, with particular attention to the insurance sector’s evolving legal landscape Policy Framework & Process Optimisation Oversee the creation, implementation, and continuous improvement of governance & legal processes, templates, and workflows Drive maturity in governance & legal operations by introducing scalable tools, metrics, and reporting frameworks Ensure internal controls and insurance-specific standards are consistently applied across all business units Project Management Apply structured project management methodologies to deliver governance & legal initiatives efficiently Scope, plan, and execute cross-functional projects, ensuring stakeholder alignment and measurable outcomes Champion process optimisation and continuous improvement in legal workflows, drawing on best practices from modern legal operations and project delivery models Technology & Innovation Collaborate closely with product and engineering teams to embed compliance into software development and data handling Implement legal tech solutions to automate and streamline governance & legal processes Internal & External Stakeholder Management Coordinate internal and & external legal advisors across various domains (e.g. corporate, IP, employment, regulatory) Negotiate and manage budgets, engagements, and performance of external counsel Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders to integrate governance considerations into strategic and operational decisions Cross-Functional Collaboration Act as an interface between corporate legal, business, and technical teams to ensure governance & legal input is embedded early in product development and regulatory change programmes Team Leadership Manage and mentor a small team, including a working student Foster a culture of accountability, learning, and excellence Qualifications & Experience Minimum 6 years of professional experience, ideally within a fast-paced, international environment Proven track record in leading governance & legal functions or major governance & legal projects Deep expertise in governance & legal frameworks related to IT, artificial intelligence, and data protection within a European context Strong understanding of European regulatory frameworks and cross-border governance & legal issues Technical affinity and experience in software development processes Experience in the insurance sector is a plus, particularly in navigating regulatory frameworks, claims-related legal matters, and consumer protection Fluent in German and English Beneficial: Qualified lawyer in Germany or another major European jurisdiction Why getolo? 🌴 Salary & Vacation Attractive salary Tiered vacation days starting at 28 days (up to a maximum of 30 days) Days off on December 24th and 31st 🧑💻 Mobility & Flexibility Choose between a Swapfiets bike or a subsidized BVG Eco Ticket or Deutschlandticket Work in a hybrid setup – from your home office or in our Berlin-Mitte office Work up to 60 days per year from another EU country 🧘 Health Access to free coaching sessions with nilo.health, our mental wellbeing partner Try our products yourself!
